THE BARN LOCATION

High Nibthwaite is a backwater in the true sense of the word. A small hamlet, of only 11 houses, just a stone's throw from the south eastern shore of Coniston Water. Open fell, deciduous woodland, the lake shore and beautiful pasture surround the hamlet.

The peaceful location - devoid of shops, pubs, street lights and any sizeable road - is bliss. If you want to be in the Lake District, but not among the busy hubbub of many of the 'honey pot' towns and villages, then Nibthwaite is the location for you.

The nearest shop is 6 miles to the south at Greenodd village Post Office and store, or you can go 7 miles to the north to the mixture of shops in Coniston. The small town of Ulverston is only 15 minutes / 8 miles away - a wonderful, characterful old market town with a very good selection of all manner of shops.

The nearest pub, The Red Lion, is 2 miles away at Lowick Bridge. There are, of course, many other pubs to choose from in the near locality of Coniston (where you will find the award winning beer/brewery of Blue Bird Ale) and Hawkshead. The Lake District has an abundance of restaurants and pubs and we will be happy to help you find something to suit you.

The barn is perfectly placed for walkers, in fact some barn visitors park up their car and never use it again all week! Indeed, there are many walks of varying length / terrain right on the doorstep. But it is also easy to access any of the 'big hills', the other lakes, fells, moors and valleys. In under an hour, of driving through stunning landscape, you can be up in the North Lakes, on the west coast cliffs or heading east to the Howgills or the lush Eden valley.

It is also a cyclists' paradise here. Whether you are a road biker or a mountain biker, we have masses of options direct from Nibthwaite. The tracks in Grizedale Forest (accessible from here) offer the whole gamut of rides: gentle routes to serious challenges. Tracks and bridle-ways abound…..just bring your pedalling legs!
